PostSubject: advice needed on snail tank setup.   Sun Apr 12, 2009 2:44 am

Hi all I have 4 2ft tanks empty at the moment and would love to set a couple up as snail only tanks.

what snails would you recommend for them?

how many per tank?

I have a breeding colony of cherry shrimp that would look nice split up.

are sponge filters ok? even with an automated water changer that changes 10% every day?

what substrate?

the tanks would be heated as they are in my fish room which is stable at 25c.

what decor would you suggest?

many advance thanks for your help.

Are these 60ltr tanks?

You can have a good mix of snails living together in a 2ft tank, apples, nerites and trumpet snails will all get along fine in the tank. To start with, you could go for 6 apple snails, 20 trumpets and 2 nerites, and let them breed their numbers up. Don't buy more nerites than two though or you may find they starve from lack of algae.

Sponge filters will be ok initially, but as the colony grows you will do best to upgrade. Water changes of 10% will again be fine daily with a couple of snails, but again (with a sponge filter this is), 20% may be better when the colony gets going.

Substrate is best being sand for the trumpets to burrow in. Decor is up to you, but if you are planning to get one of the larger apple snail species, dont use live plants or you will find them eaten pretty quickly.

Yep that would be fine. You can add some plastic plants if you would like as well.

That will be a fine staple diet. Bloodworms and other frozen foods are fine in moderation, as are vegatables like cucumber and sweet potatoe.

I see that you posted here last year, so i dont know what happend, if you set up your snail-only aquarium or not, but here's what i think :

If you would like a sand-rock aquarium, Sulawesi Elephants (Tylomelania) loves that combination. They don't like gravel, the want fine sand and/or rocks.
Giving the fact that plants are not doing well in sand, i recommend you some Anubias on the rocks, and some type of moss on some sticks, or on the rock as well.

If you want a minimalist look, with more little plants, i recomend Anubias Nana var. "petite".
Tylomelania wont touch it.
