Subject: What filtration would a snail only tank need? Mon May 25, 2009 5:38 am
Do snails produce ammonia like fish & hence depend on biological filtration to remove the ammonia/nitrites? Or is purely mechanical filtration sufficient?

Like most aquatic animals, snails produce ammonia and will need a biological filter with water changes to keep them alive.
You can try a mechanical filter, and indeed I use a mechanical filter in a very small tank. However, this is understocked and gets 20% water changes every 4 days.

I have a nano-tank for my 2 Sulawesi Elephants (and their little baby), and i have a internal filter, that has (in this order) : Course foam, Fine Foam, a few JBL Micromec balls (for biological filtration), and a little 2x2 cm perlon pad (JBL Symec Micro)
It works great, the NH4 and NO2 stay very low, almost gone.
